Career guidance

Career guidance plays a crucial role in school education and supports our students on their path toward their professional future. The aim of career guidance is to provide young people with a solid basis for making decisions about their future careers. Through various measures and programs, the StuBos (career guidance coordinators) help students identify their strengths and interests and explore suitable career fields.

A central component of career guidance is the KAoA elements (“No Graduation Without a Connection”), which were introduced in North Rhine-Westphalia. These elements are designed to make the transition from school to work easier. The main KAoA elements include:

  1. Career Guidance:
Workshops, information events, and individual counseling sessions take place in different grade levels to inform students about various career fields and to encourage the development of their personal interests.
  2. Practical Experience:
Through internships in companies and businesses, students have the opportunity to gain practical experience and insight into everyday working life. This promotes career orientation and helps them develop realistic expectations of different professions.
  3. Career Counseling:
Our school works closely with the Federal Employment Agency to provide students with professional career counseling. This counseling includes individual consultations, the analysis of strengths and weaknesses, and support in preparing application documents.
  4. Networking:
We promote cooperation with local companies, chambers of crafts, and other educational institutions. Through networking events and partnerships, we enable students to establish contacts and find potential apprenticeship opportunities.
  5. Transition Management:
To ensure a smooth transition from school into professional life, we provide support in finding apprenticeship positions and continue to assist students during the period after graduation.

Career Fair

Since 2023, our school has organized a career fair once a year – the next one will take place on October 7, 2025 – specifically for students in grades 8 to 10. This event is an important part of our career guidance program and offers students the opportunity to engage intensively with their professional future.

The career fair pursues several important goals:

Information and Orientation:
Students can learn about various career fields and training opportunities. This helps them better recognize and define their interests and strengths.

Direct Contact with Companies:
Many local companies participate in the career fair and present themselves and their apprenticeship opportunities. Students have the chance to speak directly with company representatives, ask questions, and gain valuable insights into different professions.

Practical Experience:
Many exhibitors offer workshops and hands-on activities that give students practical insights into different types of work and help them develop a better understanding of the requirements of various professions.

Networking:
The fair promotes interaction between companies and young people. This can help students establish important contacts that may be valuable for their future careers.

Digital Learning

Digital media and technologies have become an indispensable part of our daily lives – and they are also playing an increasingly important role in everyday school life. At our secondary school, we do not see digital learning as a replacement, but as a meaningful addition to traditional forms of teaching. Our goal is to prepare our students as effectively as possible for a digitally shaped world of life and work.

Learning with Digital Tools

We use modern digital tools purposefully to make lessons varied, individualized, and practical. These include, among others:

  • the use of tablets in the classroom,
  • the use of learning platforms and digital learning materials,
  • interactive learning opportunities to encourage independent learning,
  • and project-based work using digital media.

IServ as the Digital Hub

A central element of our digital infrastructure is IServ. Through IServ, we organize school communication, the exchange of learning materials, and the management of digital assignments. Students, teachers, and parents benefit from secure and structured access to:

  • email and messaging functions,
  • a digital timetable and substitution schedule,
  • cloud storage for school documents,
  • assignment modules with submission and feedback functions,
  • as well as video conferencing tools for digital lessons or parent-teacher meetings.

IServ promotes students’ self-organization, simplifies work processes, and strengthens digital networking within our school community.

iPads for Grades 8–10: Starting in the 2025/26 School Year

Beginning with the 2025/26 school year, all students in grades 8 to 10 will receive an iPad as a loan device provided by the city. The devices will remain the property of the school authority but will be available to all students for daily school use and – according to the educational concept – also for use at home.

In this way, we are creating a consistent digital foundation for teaching, encouraging self-directed learning, and enabling modern teaching methods that specifically strengthen media literacy and creativity. The introduction will be accompanied by technical support, usage guidelines, and training for students, teachers, and parents.

Strong in a VUCA World

Our world is changing rapidly – it is becoming increasingly complex, dynamic, and unpredictable. These developments are often described by the term VUCA:

  • Volatility (rapid change),
  • Uncertainty,
  • Complexity, and
  • Ambiguity.

In this VUCA world, not only subject knowledge is important, but above all interdisciplinary skills such as creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, digital confidence, and the ability to adapt flexibly to new situations. Through digital learning, open learning formats, and project-oriented work, we promote exactly these skills and prepare our students for the future.
