What to Do During a Storm

What should you do if extreme weather is forecast?

The following applies:

Parents decide whether the commute to school is reasonable and safe for their children.

In the event of extreme weather, parents may decide not to send their child to school.

In this case, parents must notify the school immediately.

General guidelines for extreme weather conditions

In the event of sudden extreme weather conditions without an official order to suspend in-person classes, parents decide on a case-by-case basis whether it is reasonable for their child to travel to school. In such cases, the school must be notified immediately.

Suspension of In-Person Classes

Based on reports and recommendations from the German Weather Service (DWD), district administrations and the Ministry of Schools and Education (MSB) receive immediate notifications regarding the presence of extreme weather conditions (severe weather). Severe weather events include:

(extremely) heavy rain,

severe gusts of wind up to extreme hurricane-force winds,

severe to extreme thunderstorms, possibly accompanied by extreme hurricane-force winds or heavy rain,

(extremely) heavy snowfall, possibly with drifts,

black ice.

In these cases, based on reports and recommendations from the German Weather Service, the crisis management teams of the individual district administrations will decide, after consulting with the MSB’s school crisis officer, whether to announce the suspension of in-person classes. If the severe weather affects the entire state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Ministry of Schools and Education may decide to suspend in-person classes statewide. If in-person classes are suspended, students must remain at home for their own safety and participate in distance learning or complete alternative assignments.
