German
At the Selma-Lagerlöf-Sekundarschule, the subject of German in grades 5 to 10 attaches particular importance to the holistic development of central language skills. In the first years (grades 5 and 6) we focus on strengthening the sense of language by reading age-appropriate literature and writing creative texts. Grammar and spelling are taught inductively, i.e. in connection with the texts read and written, and never treated in isolation.
From grade 7 we expand the focus on the analysis of literary works, such as short stories and poems. The students learn not only to understand these texts, but also to critically question them. Discussions and debates are an integral part of the lessons to strengthen the ability to express oral expression and develop the ability to express well-founded opinions.
In the higher grades (8 to 10), the focus is on writing different types of text, such as discussions and interpretations. The students deal intensively with literary and factual texts in order to further develop their analytical skills. Our goal is to provide the students with comprehensive language skills and to prepare them for a self-confident appearance in their studies and work.
At a school named after the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature, we attach great importance to reading. Every year we read a reading in class, take part in the “Day of the Book”, organize a reading day, on which many different people from Selm, including the mayor, read to our students and organize a reading competition ourselves, the winner of which participates in other competitions. In addition, we have book chests for some classes and maintain a close cooperation with the Selm library.
