French
The subject French at the Selma Lagerlöf Secondary School offers students the opportunity to learn one of the world’s most important languages. French is not only the official language of France, but also of many other countries, particularly in Europe, Africa, and North America. By learning the French language, students acquire valuable communication skills that can benefit them in an increasingly globalized world.
Special features of French as a subject include a strong focus on oral and written communication skills, as well as the comprehension of listening and reading texts. Lessons are often designed interactively, with role-plays, dialogues, and group work to encourage practical language use. In addition, students gain insights into French culture, history, and ways of life, thereby broadening their intercultural understanding. This also includes the unique trip to Paris.
Another important aspect is the opportunity to obtain the DELF certificate (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française), an internationally recognized language diploma that students can earn as part of their French studies. This certificate not only serves as proof of language proficiency but can also be helpful for future applications and career opportunities.
French is generally offered starting in Year 7. Upon completion of Year 10, students will have completed their second foreign language requirement, which facilitates the transition to upper secondary education leading to the Abitur. Language learning is supported through modern teaching methods and digital media, making lessons varied, engaging, and practical.
Of course, we also travel to French-speaking countries such as Belgium and France, allowing our younger students to put their language skills into practice in real-life situations.
