Art

“Art and culture are not like cream on the cake that you add when you feel good, but they are the yeast in the dough. If you don’t put this yeast in the dough, you get stones instead of bread” (Johannes Rau in a speech as Federal President)

The subject of Art at the Selma Lagerlöf Secondary School plays a central role in the holistic education of our students. It is not only about teaching practical skills or aesthetic design, but above all about fostering creative thinking processes, personal expression, and a deeper understanding of culture and society.

In Art lessons, students work with a variety of materials, techniques, and artistic styles. They learn to analyze visual impressions, critically examine works of art, and transform their own ideas into artistic creations. This process encourages the development of creativity, problem-solving skills, and individual expression — abilities that are highly valuable in many other areas of life.

In addition to practical work, students also explore art history, which deepens their cultural understanding. By engaging with historical and contemporary works of art, students learn how art reflects and influences social developments. In doing so, they develop their own cultural identity and an awareness of different perspectives and forms of expression.

Furthermore, Art lessons promote emotional and social skills. Art provides a space in which feelings and thoughts can be expressed nonverbally, which is especially important for students who may struggle with verbal communication. Teamwork and discussions about artistic work also help strengthen communication skills and empathy.

Overall, the subject of Art at the Selma Lagerlöf Secondary School supports young people in many ways — intellectually, emotionally, socially, and culturally. It encourages them to think beyond boundaries, develop independent solutions, and shape their environment creatively.
