Mathematics at the Selma-Lagerlöf-Sekundarschule – Fly with us through the world of numbers

Imagine you are like Nils Holgersson, the main character from the famous novel by Selma Lagerlöf, the namesake of our school. By magical means, Nils becomes tiny and flies across the vast landscapes of Sweden on the wings of a goose. Just as Nils discovers the world from a completely new perspective during his journey, you too will explore the fascinating world of mathematics at the Selma Lagerlöf Secondary School.

During his journey, Nils learns how everything in nature is connected — just as you will learn with us that numbers and mathematical processes are fundamental elements of our world. With every new topic you discover in mathematics lessons, you travel a little further, just as Nils moves from one adventure to the next. Numbers accompany you constantly in everyday school life: classrooms numbered from 015 to 219, lessons starting punctually at 7:55 a.m., more than 500 students arriving daily from different places, and a salad roll costing €1.50. Yet far more interesting than the numbers themselves is the structure behind them.

Over six years at our school, you will build the foundations that you can later expand upon in upper secondary education, vocational training, or technical college.

Our mathematics teachers are like the wise wild geese that safely guide you through your school years, showing you that every number tells a story and every equation contains a mystery. Together, we explore topics such as geometry, fractions, and percentages while tackling exciting mathematical questions.

Our goal at the Selma Lagerlöf Secondary School is not only to equip you with essential mathematical skills, but also to show you how important mathematics is in our world.

Enthusiasm for mathematics is further encouraged through various activities such as the Math Rally and “Maths in Advent.” Competitions like the Kangaroo Mathematics Competition also contribute to fostering excitement for the subject.

With us, every mathematics lesson becomes an exciting journey in which you not only learn how to calculate, but also understand how numbers shape the world around us. Just like Nils Holgersson, you will grow — not only in knowledge, but also in your understanding of the wonders of mathematics. We look forward to exploring the world of numbers together with you!
